This client has a market leading reputation for providing products, services and innovative solutions to their customers, so it was essential to deliver the expected value of the upgrade on time and on budget, while minimising the risk of disruption to their business operations and customer service.

The Problem

A client review of services, applications, and infrastructure had identified gaps in resiliency, stability, and security. Several critical areas were highlighted, that if not remediated could have severe impacts on day to day operation of the business and its customers. One key area of risk was the strategic Database Management Infrastructure that supported all the core systems within the organisation.

A remediation project was initiated to close the areas of risk down. They recognised that a Testing Services delivery partner with a proven track record for high quality and cost-effective testing within such a complex project was essential. This would provide confidence that the changes implemented would deliver increased stability, resilience and security of the Database Management Infrastructure required.

The Goal

  • Deliver comprehensive Regression Testing services for the Database Management Infrastructure Upgrade project
  • Provide the resources to define, plan, manage, and deliver Regression Testing for Database Management Infrastructure Upgrade project
  • Identify and escalate any areas of risk found during testing that could impact the day to day operation of the organisation

The Challenge

This client engagement presented us with an opportunity to demonstrate our ability to quickly mobilise Testing Resources and deliver a robust Testing Strategy for the project. Due to the scale of the remediation project, we were faced with several significant challenges including:
 
  • Size and complexity of the Database Management Infrastructure.
  • Number of services and applications supported by the Database Management Infrastructure.
  • Key Stakeholder and Business Owner identification, engagement and buy-in to the Test Strategy.

 

The Solution

Our Testing Team responded quickly, working collaboratively with solution architects, technical designers, and programme/project resources to understand the complexities of the infrastructure architecture, as well as the services and applications that depended on the infrastructure. We believe that it is an essential step to obtain Test Strategy engagement and key stakeholder buy-in at the outset of any project.

After the analysis stage we identified that around 40 applications were impacted, of which 23 Applications are critical to the clients day to day business activities. A total of 14 distributed systems and 3 Test Environments were impacted by the Database Management Infrastructure upgrade.

Based on this analysis, our Testing Team rapidly initiated engagement with the application owners, distributed system owners and test environment owners. Working in partnership they scoped, agreed and delivered a Testing Strategy to ensure that the stability, resilience and security of the applications, services and database management infrastructure was maintained and increased after the delivery of the enhancements.

Through effective and continued engagement with the client, we conducted Test Preparation activities to deliver fit for purpose:

  • Test Risk Assessment
  • Test Strategy
  • Test Plans
  • Test Scenarios
  • Test Cases
  • Test Data
  • Test Environment Requirements
  • Test Readiness Review

All of these met the needs of the organisation as well as the Application owners.

During Test Execution, our expertise was also key in the successful delivery of Manual and Automated Regression Testing. This was done for 6 Critical Applications across 3 managed test environments, together with the successful coordination of Application Regression of a further 34 Applications across the 3 test environments. All were delivered within agreed project/programme timescales. In addition, we provided all the required Test Completion Reporting for Applications that completed Regression Testing.

All the activities undertaken by Agenor Testing Services where aligned to the required governance and compliance of the organisation.

The Result

The Agenor Testing Service team successfully completed all testing within time and on budget, allowing the client to confidently implement the relevant changes to their Data Management infrastructure with no impact on services, applications and customers. This was achieved by:

  • Completing Regression Testing across multiple test environments, applications, services, and distributed systems that utilise the Data Management Infrastructure, meeting the required quality and auditability criteria set out by the organisation
  • Delivering robust and re-usable Test Artefacts: for the project, meeting the governance and compliance policies of the organisation. These Test Artefacts where adopted and used by other projects undertaking Infrastructure upgrades funded by the organisation
  • Utilising the latest testing tools and techniques: to deliver successful regression testing for the project – both manual and automation test approach utilised
  • Improving the Regression Testing process/execution: by completing a review on testing for the project and implementing test automation framework for the project.
